This is the third chapter of Woofles. I'm sorry that it's so long. I hope you enjoy it anyway!
Five minutes seemed like a lifetime to Natasha. Momma finally arrived. She had Band-aids, gauze, and she had even called Poppa. "He'll be right over," Momma said. Then she added, "Poppa can help." It was true. He was a doctor. A missionary doctor at that, thought Natasha. That's why we're always moving. She had lived in seven different places, and she was twelve. Wow, Natasha was thinking, This is the eighth place I've lived in. She thought about how lucky some girls were - they lived in one place their whole lives. Not me, she thought sadly. But why? It's not fair! 'Life is fair, then?' Momma's words rang in her head. 'No, life isn't fair.' 'Fair? What fair? Are we going to a fair?' Poppa had said. 'Clarence, do be serious!' Momma had scolded him. Natasha's thoughts drifted away as Poppa arrived. We have to help the girl, Natasha thought. "Poppa, is she okay?" Natasha asked anxiously. "How would I know? I haven't even looked at her yet!" After Poppa had checked the girl, Lucy spoke up. "What's her name?" It took Natasha a couple seconds to realize that Lucy was talking to her. "I don't know," Natasha answered her. "My name is Kelsey," the girl said as she sat up. Everyone jumped. "She's alive!" Lucy exclaimed. Natasha rolled her eyes. "Of course she is, silly." "I live over there," Kelsey said, pointing in the direction of her home. "We'll have to visit you some time," Momma said, smiling. "Well, Kelsey, Poppa said," We need to get Lucy home for her nap." Lucy scowled at him. Kelsey nodded her head. "Of course, you can go." So Natasha's parents left with Lucy, and Natasha asked, "What on earth happened?" Kelsey replied, "I just fell off my skateboard." She pointed to a skateboard in the bushes. "I was so worried about you that I didn't even think about how you got hurt," Natasha remarked."And you were unconscious!" "I guess I hit my head and everything went black a little while. And this blood," Kelsey continued, "I must have split my lip open and scraped my knee really bad, but other than that, I'm fine." Natasha did a thorough inspection of Kelsey and decided that she was beautiful, even though her lip was split open and her knee was scraped. Kelsey had blond hair, instead of curly black hair; creamy white skin, instead of dark, coffee-colored skin. She had light blue eyes that sparkled like sapphires, and not dull, dark brown ones. Yes, looking at people like this, Natasha felt almost ugly. But that changed when Kelsey broke into her thoughts and asked, "Do you want to play at the park?" "Sure," replied Natasha. They played for a long while, and Natasha's stomach eventually told her that it was time to go eat supper. "I need to go home now," she said. "So - will I see you tomorrow?" asked Kelsey. "Only if you can play," Natasha answered with a grin. "What school are you going to go to?" Kelsey asked Natasha as she turned to leave. "Probably Edison Memorial," Natasha said, shrugging. A grin lit up Kelsey's face. "That's my school, too!" she exclaimed. It wasn't until Natasha was almost home that she realized that God had answered one of her prayers. Thank you, God, she prayed silently. You gave me a friend.
